As discussed on The Vet Practice Blog, the humble pumpkin is a great addition to the diet of your cat or dog.
Pumpkin is low in calories so if your pet needs to lose some weight, you can add a regular amount of cooked pumpkin into their diet. Most dogs like the taste of pumpkin. With cats, you may need to add it to their existing food since they tend to be a little fussier about pumpkin than dogs.
Pumpkin contains essential nutrients such as Vitamins A, C and E as well as the B complex group – Niacin, Folates, Vitamin B6 Thiamine and pantothenic acid. Its also rich in minerals like Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium and Copper.
Pumpkin is a natural source of fibre. Cooked and mashed pumpkin can help settle down an upset stomach and improve digestion. There is no need to add any salt or flavourings to the pumpkin.
How much to add? For small dogs and cats, try adding just one teaspoon of cooked mashed pumpkin to their meal and see how they go with it. For medium and large size dogs, one tablespoon is a good starting point.
Can dogs and cats eat pumpkin every day?
Yes – you can add small amounts of pumpkin to their meal every day. The additional fibre from a daily dose has these benefits:
